Minis
Newport Rugby Club is proud to offer a welcoming and supportive environment for young players aged 4 to 9. Our Minis Program is designed to introduce boys and girls to the fundamentals of rugby, with an emphasis on enjoyment, skill development, and player safety. The Minis use modified laws that are designed to ensure a safe, inclusive, and fun experience for players, while progressively developing their rugby skills and understanding of the game.
U3 to U5 – Ripples | Get into Rugby Walla
This young program focuses on fostering a love for rugby through a mix of engaging drills and games, promoting teamwork, coordination, and physical fitness. It encourages kids to build ability and confidence on the field while fostering a sense of community. This age group is not competition but an introduction to the game and the community club. Training is held from 4 – 5pm on Friday afternoons.
U6 & U7 – Get into Rugby Tri Time (Non Contact)
For our youngest players (U6 & U7), we focus on TriTag rugby, a non-contact version of the game. This is a fun, low-pressure introduction to rugby, where children can learn essential skills such as running, passing, and catching in a safe and supportive environment. The goal is to foster a love for the game and encourage participation rather than competition. Training is held from 4-5pm Friday afternoons, while games are played on Saturday mornings at the various clubs over the Northern Beaches.
U8 & U9 – Introduction to Contact Rugby
At the U8 and U9 levels, players are gradually introduced to contact rugby (tackling). We place a strong emphasis on teaching correct technique and safety, ensuring that all players feel confident and secure as they begin tackling. The transition to contact rugby is carefully managed to maintain player welfare while continuing to develop skills in a fun and supportive setting. Training is held from 5-6pm Friday afternoons, while games are played on Saturday mornings at the various clubs over the Northern Beaches.
