Junior rugby at Newport covers the U10 to U18 age groups, providing children and young people with a fantastic opportunity to develop their rugby skills in a competitive yet fun and family-friendly environment. We are dedicated to ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable experience with us.
The Australian Rugby Union has designed modified games that are adapted as players progress through each age group, eventually transitioning into full adult game structures. This step-by-step approach allows players to build their skills and confidence safely and enjoyably.
Our junior teams compete in a league organized by the Sydney Junior Rugby Union, which includes clubs from all over Sydney. Teams are graded in this competition to ensure matches are balanced, promoting enjoyment and fair play. The season runs from March to August each year, with games held on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings.
In U10 and U11, modified laws, field sizes, and team structures are implemented. U12 introduces full fields and full teams of 15 players. From U13 onwards, players compete under U19 international laws.
The specific age guidelines for these age groups are provided by the Australian Rugby Union and the Sydney Junior Rugby Union to facilitate the players’ growth alongside the game.
As part of the Sydney Junior Rugby Union, our junior players compete against clubs across the Sydney Basin on Sunday mornings and Friday nights. Starting from U10, players are also introduced to representative rugby through the Warringah Rats’ pathways program, offering development squads and state cup opportunities.
Through these experiences, Newport Junior Rugby is committed to nurturing the talents of young athletes and ensuring a positive, supportive rugby community.
