Newport Junior Rugby Club is a community-focused rugby club offering a welcoming environment for boys and girls across three divisions: Minis, Juniors, and Girls.
Newport Junior Rugby Club is committed to nurturing young athletes while ensuring a fun, family-friendly environment where all players can thrive and grow both on and off the field.
Minis
(Ages 3-9) introduces young players to rugby through fun, safe, and age-appropriate activities. Starting with Ripples - Get into Rugby Walla (U3-U5), children develop coordination and teamwork through non-competitive play. At U6 and U7, players enjoy non-contact TriTag rugby - Get into Rugby Tri Time (Non Contact), focusing on basic skills like running, passing, and catching. The U8 and U9 age groups are gradually introduced to contact rugby with an emphasis on correct tackling technique and player safety. Training sessions are held on Friday afternoons, with games played Saturday mornings across Northern Beaches clubs.
Juniors
(U10-U18) provides an opportunity for players to develop skills in a competitive yet supportive environment. Using a step-by-step approach aligned with Australian Rugby Union guidelines, players progress through modified game laws before transitioning to full-field, 15-player matches by U12. From U10, Newport players compete in the Sydney Junior Rugby Union league, with matches held on Sundays and Friday evenings. Junior players also have access to the Warringah Rats’ representative pathways program, offering further development and representative opportunities.
Girls
(U10-U18) has been a pioneer for girls’ rugby in Sydney, providing an inclusive and supportive platform for young girls to develop rugby skills and confidence. The girls’ competition runs in two formats: a 10-a-side league from March to July, followed by a 7s gala competition after the holidays. Matches are held on Sundays, and girls are encouraged to join training sessions to experience rugby firsthand. With access to Warringah representative pathways and a dedicated girls’ facility, Newport Girls Rugby fosters pride, leadership, and a strong sense of community.
